Which stories belong to Angel Diaries, V and Iwishacana/Acanawishi?
  • In the Beginning There Were Fairy Tales belong to Iwishacana/Acanawishi.
  • Crash and Burn, Family Reunion, and Wrinkle belong to V
  • Forget, Transcend and Forget Me Nots belong to Angel Diaries
In The Beginning is a prelude to Iwishacana/Acanawishi and how it came into being.

Family Reunion and Crash and Burn are also preludes to V.

Wrinkle is an excerpt of V.

Forget and Transcend are preludes to Angel Diaries.

Forget Me Nots is Jia's story when she's all grown up. I wrote a screenplay about her life. I might publish it later on.

When will Angel Diaries going to be published?

Will the short story Changes or College Life become a full fledge novel?

Changes probably will not become a novel. I don't have enough information about the characters to create a whole novel. College Life will eventually become a novel, but I'm not sure when. I have a lot more novels to write before I get to College Life.

What is the setting of College Life? Which college?

Hampton University. For those who guessed right gets a gold star! :)

Why have College Life set at an HBCU? Why haven't I heard of an HBCU before reading your anthology?

I know this is going to sound sooo corny, but I had this story in a dream. Sort of. My dream and how it became a story is two different things, but it will be revealed in the novel. Anyway, it is set at Hampton University because that's where my dream was. I don't know why I was thinking of Hampton University, but that's where my dream was, so that's why.

Um, I hate to say this, but most of the time I was in high school it was white school this and white school that. And you should go to this white school because . . . I didn't even know what an HBCU was in high school even though I'm an African American myself. So instead of following the herd and going to a white college, I went to an HBCU.

Now getting back to your question. The main reason why I think you might not have heard of an HBCU is because it's not widely known. It's not widely accepted to go to an HBCU. Every time I say I go to Hampton University, which is a pretty prestigious black private college, I get a blank stare and a nod like they know what I'm talking about. If I said, I go to Harvard, I would get more of a reaction. Despite color.

But the moment I mention Hampton University, blank stare. Most people just don't know about black colleges and universities and it's really sad. Even though I do NOT promote going to Hampton University (at all. Seriously. Save your money and do not go there), I do believe in spreading knowledge about your options as far as college.

What is with the WSV poems?

A lot of my poems are broken into pieces and for a long time that's how I kept them until I just wrote the pieces. Then I thought maybe this isn't a poem? Maybe by technical definition it's not a poem at all. Hmm. But I liked the idea of breaking poems into mere images and just the basics, so I kept writing them. I knew that no publisher would ever let my those poems see the light, but I wrote them anyway. Why? Because I love doing it and I hoped that one day some reader would get them and love them just as much as I do.

Now that I get the chance to give you readers just a taste of those poems, I'm hoping against hope that you understand them and won't go all English teacher on me! :) I guess we'll see.

Why did you put your childhood poems in your anthology?

I put one of my childhood poems in there so that it echoes the budding and growth of the flower of my overall work. My becoming a poet isn't in order in the anthology but hopefully you can see the progression just the same.

Why is Jia a main character in two of the short stories in the anthology?

Since I wrote Angel Diaries and created the character Jia, I loved her. I really feel like she could be my daughter and I became emotionally invested in her. And Angel Diaries is from the perspective of Lindsey, which I love her too but I really never got the chance to investigate Jia's life. Until I wrote short stories and a screenplay about her (which is called Afterlife Investigations) and I thought why not include more about her? Especially since the people who critiqued Angel Diaries really liked her too. So that's why there are two stories about her. One when she was in middle school struggling with life and one when she's all grown up.

Where did you get the idea for Black and White from?

Well, it's actually based on a true story! And I know some people may be shocked to hear that, but it's completely true. I read about it somewhere and the story really stuck with me. So I wrote her story. I didn't hear about her decision in the end, so that's why there's a questionable ending. I didn't want to force my decision on her, like Brian was trying to, so I left the decision up to her.

And I know some of you are saying the answer is obvious, but really who are we to know? It's a huge life changing decision. So we will never know what her decision was, but I hope she made the right decision.

Is Wrinkle a vampire story?

No. I do not write vampire stories. Period. Why? Because vampires are getting way too much hype right now and I refuse to join the herd. I know it sounds snobby but that's just my feelings about it.

And to be completely honest, there are things scarrier in the world than vampires. Now I know you're wondering what was going on in the story then. Well, you'll just have to wait until V comes out. :)

Will you do anymore short story and poetry anthologies?

Absolutely. I am working on an expanded version of Everblossom right now actually. Unfortunately for the squeamish types, there's going to be more blood and guts. Additionally, there will be a whole next section added. I can't wait!!

Another anthology I'm thinking of adding is a horror anthology, but that won't be out until like next Halloween. I'm thinking it'll be worth the wait though. :) Hopefully more about this will be on my blog. I'll be sure to add the extra icon if I decide to write it or when I decide to write it.
